Tuesday afternoon Cardinal news and notes

I’m still mad at everyone who saw the Northern Lights.

—Louisville has landed a commitment from Indiana WR LeBron Hill. Hill picked the Cards over Kentucky and Miami, among others.

—Matt McGavic over at Louisville Report breaks down the game of the latest Cardinal commit.

—Colorado transfer guard J’Vonne Hadley says he’s “ready to make some noise” at Louisville.

—Preseason video season has begun, and for a change, I could not be more excited.

That’s Aboubacar Traore in the first video absolutely flying.

—Ten U of L athletic programs posted perfect APR scores for the 2022-23 academic year.

—Dan McDonnell is being listed as one of the candidates to fill the head coaching void that currently exists at South Carolina.

—Louisville is down seven spots to No. 18 in The Athletic’s latest preseason college football top 25.

18. Louisville (Previous: 11)

After initially loading up in the portal, Jeff Brohm saw considerable attrition in the spring, including winter transfer pickups Tyler Baron and running back Peny Boone (Toledo). Much of the Cards’ lineup will be newcomers, led by quarterback Tyler Shough (Texas Tech), running back Donald Chaney Jr. (Miami) and wide receiver Ja’Corey Brooks (Alabama). First-team All-ACC defensive end Ashton Gillotte and ex-Harvard defensive tackle Thor Griffith lead a strong defensive line. The secondary could be a concern.

Other notables: Notre Dame (7), Florida State (10), Miami (14), NC State (21), Clemson (22), Kentucky (just missed).

—Highly-touted class of 2025 DE C.J. May talks about his recent visit to Louisville.

—David Hale puts all 134 starting FBS quarterbacks into tiers for this ESPN feature. Louisville’s Tyler Shough, Pierce Clarkson and Brady Allen (Harrison Bailey should be here as well) are in tier 10.

TIER 10: Looking for a reboot (11 players)

Louisville’s Tyler Shough, Brady Allen, Pierce Clarkson

Mississippi State’s Blake Shapen, Michael Van Buren

UCF’s KJ Jefferson, Jacurri Brown

Washington’s Will Rogers, Demond Williams Jr.

Wisconsin’s Tyler Van Dyke, Braedyn Locke

There’s a pretty simple formula for success in Hollywood these days: Take existing intellectual property and reboot it with some minor changes to give it a fresh look.

Can the same formula work in college football? A few schools are going to try in 2024, with quarterbacks who’ve tasted success and started a bunch of games getting a fresh start after a rough and rocky 2023.

Odds are there’s at least one “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” here... and probably at least one of the Mark Wahlberg reboots, too.

What you need to know:

A comparison:

QB A: 62.0 Total QBR, 64.3% completions, 7.93 yards-per-pass, 21 total TD, 14 turnovers

QB B: 68.4 Total QBR, 63.8% completions, 7.97 yards-per-pass, 26 total TD, 12 turnovers

QB A is Jack Plummer’s 13 starts vs. FBS competition last season at Louisville. QB B is Shough in his 13 career starts, which span four previous seasons.

Louisville went 3-1 vs. top-40 defenses last season despite Plummer posting a woeful 39.6 Total QBR with just 2 TDs, 3 picks and averaging 5.9 yards per attempt in those games. If Shough can improve on those numbers in 2024, the Cardinals could be awfully dangerous.

—A walk-off home run propelled Floyd Central to its first regional baseball title since 1996.

—Six U of L track & field student athletes are set to compete in the 2024 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships from June 5-8 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

—Adam Duvall remains a fan favorite in Atlanta.

Via Rick Bozich, Athlon’s college football preview magazine has Louisville ranked higher than Kentucky and fourth overall in the ACC.

—The Padres’ Tucupita Marcano is the first player since Pete Rose in 1989 to receive a lifetime ban from baseball for betting on the sport.

—Josh Heird says that, at least for the time being, the ACC is still the best home for Louisville.

“I’m bullish on the ACC and you may say, ‘Well, don’t you have to be?’ And yeah, maybe this is born out of necessity a little bit. But I don’t think I’m being naïve,” Heird said. “I think the ACC is in a really strong position. And I just continually say, if Louisville can continue to be in the third-best conference in the country, we’re in a really good spot.”

...

“I think at times, we, fans, lose sight of where the ACC is really,” Heird said. “There’s a lot of athletic departments that would pay, I mean handsomely, to be in the ACC. As I always I always kind of refer to it, we live in a pretty good neighborhood. And I think sometimes we all get used to driving into our neighborhood, right? And then we go to another neighborhood that isn’t as nice and we realize, ‘We live in a really nice neighborhood.’ And that’s what I don’t want us, our fans, other members of the ACC, to forget. In the ACC, we continue to win more national championships than any other conference. Academically, we continue to be second to none. And you can say those things don’t matter. They do matter.”

—Muhammad Ali’s childhood home is up for sale.

—This man/robot is an absolute maniac.

—Skyy Clark apparently said the worst mistake of his life was transferring from Illinois and encouraged Louisville teammate Tre White to play for the Illini.

—I can’t even get mad about this.

—WaWa has officially broken ground on its new Louisville store.
