Wake Forest is 4-13 but they hung close with the Cards for a quarter. However, Wake couldn’t handle Louisville underneath and eventually they pulled away. It also gave Coach Walz the chance to play the bench as a unit. He said, “We’ve been getting a lot of kids a lot of minutes because I think we’re that well-balanced.... Overall we did some really good things today and we were bad at times. Of our 16 turnovers... we turned it over 6 times in the 4th quarter just on crazy stuff. Some of them want to play some more but they’ve got to do more with the minutes that they’re getting.”

Six players scored in double figures. Olivia Cochran and Jayda Curry both led the team with 12. Sydney Taylor had 11. Nyla Harris, Kiki Jefferson, and Merissah Russell all had 11 points apiece.

Olivia said, “We played Wake last year and we lost to them so we knew they were going to be more physical because they had one up on us because they won last year.... but we just needed to execute what we can do. We were sloppy at some points, but I feel like we stayed together and that’s why we won the game today.”

Nyla said, “We have to make sure as us players that we can’t lower down to anyone else’s level we have to make sure that we stick to what’s our plan. That plan is always to be strong and physical because once you hit someone first— Coach Walz says this all the time— when you hit that person first when they go in for the rebound then 9 times out of 10 the second rebound they’re not going to go for it because you already set the bar.”

Coach Walz said, “Overall we played a pretty good basketball game. I’m not pleased with 62 points that we gave up especially the 21 in the 4th. But offensively we’re shooting it well we just have to cut down on the silly turnovers in order to give us more opportunities to score.” He added, “We have to eliminate the ones where we’re taking the ball out of bounds and we are careless.”

Next up the Cards hit the road. First they travel to Clemson on Thursday the 18th. The game is at 7PM and can be seen on ACCNX.
