Worst. Season. Ever.

A List Of The "Records" Broken By The 2022-2023 UofL MBB Team Under The Leadership Of Head Coach Kenny Payne

After witnessing the absolute worst UofL men's basketball season in the history of the program, I figured it might be worth saving all of the notable "records" broken throughout the course of such for posterity's sake. The following list was compiled from Mike's game previews and recaps from this past season, and all stats are attributed to him unless otherwise noted. Any notes enclosed in parenthesis are mine. Any additions and/or corrections are welcome.

-The loss (to Lenoir-Rhyne) snapped U of L’s 39-game winning streak in exhibition play. Louisville had not lost an exhibition game since Dec. 2, 2000 when Denny Crum’s final Cardinal team fell 87-86 in double overtime to the Global Sports All-Stars. (Lenoir-Rhyne recap)

-The loss (to Bellarmine) was U of L’s first in an opening game in 19 years, and their first in a home opener in 22 (years). (Bellarmine recap)

-The loss (to Appalachian State) was Louisville’s fourth straight by a single point (dating back to last season's loss to Virginia) (for the first time in program history), and guaranteed U of L’s first 0-3 start to a season since 1986-87. (Appalachian State recap)

-The Cardinals were held to their lowest point total since 1948 in a 70-38 blowout loss to No. 21 Texas Tech in a Maui Invitational consolation bracket game. (Texas Tech recap)

-U of L’s current eight-game losing streak, which dates back to the final game of last season, is its longest since a 12-game losing streak that ended on Feb. 12, 1941. (Maryland recap) (*This ended up being a ten-game losing streak.)

-Louisville lost a game by at least 15 points for the sixth consecutive time, a new school record [...] Louisville’s now nine-game losing streak also sets a new ACC record for longest losing streak in ACC history. (Florida State recap) (*This ended up being a ten-game losing streak.)

-Wake Forest scores first ever win at Louisville, 80-72 (Wake Forest recap)

-U of L is now 0-7 in conference play for the first time since the 1939-40 season. That year, the Cardinals finished 0-11 in KIAC play. (North Carolina recap) (*The Cards ended up going 0-10 in conference play before finally winning one.)

-The (34-point) victory marked Pitt’s first ever triumph inside the KFC Yum Center. The Panthers, who entered the evening 1-12 all-time in road games against Louisville, had previously been 0-10 inside the building. (Pittsburg recap)

-Louisville wrapped up its 2022-23 slate at the KFC Yum Center with its first home loss to Virginia Tech since January of 1991. U of L had won 17 straight over the Hokies before last season. (Virginia Tech recap)

-The Cards end the regular season without a road win for the first time since 1939-40. (Virginia recap)

-Louisville has already lost nine games by 20 points or more this season, the most 20-point losses in one season in the history of Cardinal basketball. (Boston College preview)

-Louisville has lost four games by 1-point this season. That’s the most in U of L history and tied for the most ever by an ACC team. The Cardinals are 0-6 in one possession games. (Boston College preview)

-The defeat (by Boston College) was Louisville’s first in the first round of a conference tournament since 2006. (Boston College recap)

-Louisville wraps up the 2022-23 season with an overall record of 4-28. The 28 losses are the most in the 109-year history of the program, smashing the previous record of 20 set in 1997-98. (Boston College recap)
