If every conference game is going to be like this one it’s going to a crazy fun season. The Cards and ‘Canes traded leads throughout the whole game but Louisville was able to take a 73-69 lead off of a Nyla Harris layup with 55 seconds to go and that slight two possession difference was just enough. Miami answered but Nina Rickards threw down a dagger 3-pointer and with Olivia Cochran drained two free throws for a little extra breathing room in the 77-72 victory to hand Miami their first loss at home in all of 2023.
Jayda Curry came off the bench to lead all scorers with 19. Nyla Harris had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Merissah Russell had 12 points but 11 of those were in the 4th quarter when the Cards really needed someone to step up big. After the game Coach Walz said, “Merrisah made big shots in the second half. They went up 4 two times and she bangs in back to back threes.”
On Jayda he said, “She finally came out and played aggressive. I’ve been telling her to attack all year long. I’m hoping that’s her New Year’s resolution.”
He said, “Any time you can come down here and steal a win I'm not going to complain about it. Gonna make New Year’s a little more enjoyable tonight. It’s tough to play on New Year’s on the road. If you get an L it’s a long flight home.” He added, “We fought. We competed. We figured out a way to win.”
This was win #999 for the program so obviously the next win will be #1,000. Will that win be over Duke this Thursday in the Yum at 8:00? Time will tell. Coach Walz said, “This league.... every single night will be a battle.”
