A player recap and a countdown recap all in one day?!?! Oh, yeah, the time has finally come….
#0 Derrick Edwards
Position: Defensive Back
Hometown: Miami, FL
Thoughts: As noted a few days ago Derrick Edwards will have his name in the UofL history books no matter what happens in 2021 due to his number selection. In 2020 the NCAA opened number “0” as an eligible number on football rosters, and while the Cards used it in a special teams pinch last year to avoid two numbers on the field at once, Edwards will be the very first official number 0 on the roster in the history of the program. “Agent 0” reporting for duty.
Edwards is a Top 100 corner nationally out of Miami who many feel is a great value as he was on really good Palmetto team the last few years. A couple services noted his athleticism and IQ and hinted he may be underrated for what he can bring to the team as a freshman. The staff appears to be in agreement as Derrick is on the two deep behind Chandler Jones on the outside. While most (myself included) see Greedy as the backup on either side of the field there is no question Edwards will get reps in 2021 either situationally or maybe in some nickel packages. Even if we don’t see him on the field as much in 2021 there is a good chance we see him a decent amount on YouTube, as Edwards is one of the guys who started a channel and will look to post during the year some “insider” stuff for players and fans alike. He’s able to do that this season because of the NIL deal, as he can monetize his channel and make a few bucks off subscriptions and views.
Take a peek at some of the clips below and we can see some positives for sure that the staff can work with moving forward. One would think the secondary may look quite a bit different next year if things go as planned and I assume Edwards will be a big piece of it.
Shout out again to the social media/recruiting department for some of the videos and edits the last couple years. Doing a great job. Looking forward to seeing what they can put together when we get back in the habit of winning championships.
A big thanks again for following the Countdown all the way from Day 100 to today. It’s been a long summer but we finally get to enjoy Cardinal football once again. Let’s hope 24 hours from now we’re celebrating a victory over a fringe Top 25 team and looking to come out of the gate strong stringing some wins together. Before I close the book on another summer countdown series lets look back on five of my favorite posts from this summer in no particular order…
5. Late nights
It sounds just as crazy today as it did 100 days ago but huge thanks for celebrating YEAR 10 of the countdown with me here in 2021. Every year I think this may be the last one but then it pulls me right back in when May rolls around. Whether this is it or I’m back again next year, a heartfelt thanks for those clicking the link every day. I really do appreciate it. Be sure to check out the Q&As and any future podcast appearances I may hop on in the months to come. Now let’s go take care of business. Football season starts now. #GoCards.
