Thoughts: The story on Shai is a bit under the radar in my opinion as Werts was a four year starter for Georgia Southern at quarterback and lead the team to 2, 10, 7, and 8 wins respectively, and tossed in two bowl wins for good measure. Werts was the definition of a dual-threat quarterback as his run/pass split allowed Georgia Southern to have a balanced attack and Werts was able to show off some speed in the open field. His smaller frame had some limitations (think Tutu at QB in high school) but Werts, as noted above, found ways to win games and not get bottled up behind the line.

After four solid years at GS Werts entered the transfer portal knowing the next step in his career was likely not playing QB at a Power 5 school, but he wanted a shot at the next level, so after some looking Shai found a home at Louisville and Satterfield moved him to wide receiver. Werts actually committed on the same day as former Georgia Southern teammate Kenderick Duncan (projected starter at safety), and the Cards got a solid combo of athletes from the Eagles in the first week of 2021.

Werts was brought in to help fill the Tutu void in the slot as his speed is great and he has good “shiftiness” in open field. At this point in time Werts is stuck behind Braden Smith on the two deep and competing with Josh Johnson, and Tyler Harrell for time. If I had to guess I’d think all four guys see action this year and Satt goes with the hot hand on occasion out of that spot. Having a guy who has led a team for four years at the Division I level out on the field along with your QB and some other experienced players is an added bonus for the offense. I’m eager to see how they use Shai this year as he wraps up his collegiate career.

Sweet Tweet:

A little flash from Werts in the Bowl game last year. If Braden ends up getting the start over Josh Johnson, Harrell, and Werts should we go full ‘Braden and The Jets’ in the slot?

“Johnson and Werts have you seen them yet? Oh, they get spaced out...B-B-B-Braden and the Jets.”
