Ever wondered which college basketball programs have had the most success getting its players selected in the NBA draft? Furthermore, have you ever wondered which college basketball programs have had the most success getting its players selected in the NBA draft since college basketball adopted the three-point rule in 1987?
If you answered yes to both of these questions — but especially the second one — then this is the post for you.
To ensure that both quality and quantity were taken into account appropriately for these rankings, I developed the simplest possible scoring system: three points for a lottery pick (the lottery included 14, 13, 11 and nine teams at various points over the past 34 years); two points for a non-lottery first-round pick; and one point for a second-round pick. It’s flawless.
Before unveiling the full list, let’s take a look at some notable figures.
—A total of 209 different colleges have had at least one player selected in the NBA draft since 1987.
—With this same system in place, Kentucky would have checked in at No. 5 in these rankings 10 years ago. It’s common knowledge, but the Wildcats have owned the draft since John Calipari arrived in Lexington.
—Texas (No. 10) is the highest-ranked program on the list that hasn’t won a national championship during the span covered. Georgia Tech, immediately behind the Longhorns on the list, is the highest-ranked program on the list that claims no national title of any sort (Texas claims a pre-tournament title from 1933).
And now, the top Division-I college basketball programs in terms of NBA Draft production over the past 34 years:
