#84 Dez Melton
Class: RS Freshman
Ht/Wt: 6-3/240
Position: Tight End
Hometown: Glendale, AZ
Twitter: @bigdes01
Thoughts: Melton was a nice grab out of Arizona a couple seasons back who has been in ‘watch and learn’ mode the last couple years behind Ford, Pfiefer, and Franklin (I just made that last one up for the sake of alliteration). Melton played running back out of high school but has the body to play either H back or a more traditional tight end role on the edge or split out.
Even though Melton was part of the ’19 class he’s still a freshman in terms of eligibility so he has some time to make a move up the depth chart. I touched on this a few days ago but the tight end spot is a bit heavy at first glance (8 on roster) but you have to understand that position has the potential of having three guys on the field at one time with a couple off the edge and an H back in the backfield. Yes, that isn’t really a traditional Satterfield set, but the point stands that they need some bodies in that group and it’s really two distinct positions under the same title.
Getting the majority of his high school reps out of the backfield I think Melton is a nice fit at H back if given the choice. While my bromance with Marshon Ford hasn’t faded I think Dez could slide up that depth chart this season and finally see some reps situationally.
Sweet Tweet:
Lots of retweets for Dez so lets look back on the singing day video from ’19. A little Stu Holt, a pinch of Dez, and a dash of film. Recipe for greatness.
