Cards Fall to FSU 68-59

NCAA Womens Basketball: NCAA Tournament-Albany Regional-Oregon State vs Louisville Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Even the best players have games where they’re off and Dana Evans had one today. Unfortunately nobody on her team stepped in to pick up the slack. The game was close all day and with 5 minutes to go the score was even. In several games this season the Cards were able to close out in those close games but instead today FSU jumped on top and finished strong for the win.

Dana just barely kept her string of double-digit games alive with 13 points. She was the leading scorer for the Cards but shot 5 of 21. Olivia Cochran had 12 points and 9 rebounds. Kianna Smith finished with 10 points.

After the game Coach Walz didn’t mince words, “It was a poor performance all the way around both offensively and defensively. We did not play the team basketball we’ve been playing. We did not make the extra pass. We took some contested, early shots.... we just several times over-penetrated which led to turnovers and bad shots.”

The Cards have the week off before traveling to Notre Dame for their final regular season game of the season. Coach Walz said they’ll have a couple of days off before practicing again on Wednesday and “I hope it sits with them and stings for awhile. It’s going to me. And that’s really going to be a telltale sign. If it doesn’t bother our kids much then we’re not going to have a deep run in the post-season.”

Coach Walz also warned that Notre Dame is “going to have to beat us to get in” the NCAA tournament so if his team doesn’t come ready to play they could have a similar result to today. The game is on Sunday the 28th at 3PM.
