From U of L:
Head coach Dan McDonnell and the University of Louisville baseball program have announced four Cardinals as captains for the 2021 season.
Sophomore catcher Henry Davis, junior infielder/outfielder Lucas Dunn, senior left-handed pitcher Adam Elliott and senior right-handed pitcher Luke Smith were selected by UofL players and coaches as the captains for the upcoming year. Elliott and Smith will serve as captains for the second straight season.
Davis is beginning his third season behind the plate for the Cardinals. After splitting time as a freshman, Davis was off to an outstanding start in 2020. In 14 games, the Bedford, N.Y., native was hitting .372 with five doubles, three home runs and 13 RBIs. Davis has received preseason All-America recognition from all four major services released to this point heading into 2021.
Dunn returns to the mix in 2021 after missing the majority of the shortened 2020 season. A hand injury kept Dunn on the shelf to start 2020 and his first start of the season didn’t come until March 11 against Chicago State, the final game of the season for the Cardinals. Dunn was a key piece of Louisville’s run to the College World Series in 2019, hitting .309 with 10 doubles, 48 runs scored and 15 stolen bases.
Elliott will be suiting up for a fifth season with the Cardinals in 2021. The veteran southpaw has piled up 67 appearances out of the bullpen during his career, holding a 1.88 career ERA in 86 innings. The Louisville native allowed just one earned run in 10.1 innings last season and is currently third on UofL’s career ERA leaderboard.
Smith is set to start his third season at Louisville after transferring in from Parkland College for the 2019 season. The right-hander holds a 9-1 career record at Louisville, including a perfect 3-0 start to the 2020 season before it came to a halt. Smith turned in a pair of his best performances as a Cardinal in the 2019 postseason, working the two longest outings in Louisville postseason history with 8.1 innings against Illinois State in the NCAA Regional and again against Vanderbilt in the College World Series.
The Cardinals are set to open the season Feb. 19-21 against Bellarmine at Jim Patterson Stadium. First pitch on Opening Day is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
