Thoughts: Jamel was a guy the Cards actually picked up in the 2019 recruiting class beating out App State, Nebraska, and WVU, but unfortunately Starks had to get his grades right before he could qualify academically so he spent a year at Palmetto Prep doing just that, and via his twitter finished up with a 3.6 GPA his last semester....so let’s go get it in 2020.
Starks was on campus in the Spring and did get some reps in the shortened camp playing a few different spots in Coach Brown’s secondary. Starks has very good speed and showed on film that he can be a player that can fit in multiple spots during his career. I think the obvious landing spot out of the gate is at the safety position, but Brown even mentioned his flexibility could allow him to play the ‘Card’ spot as well. In the clip below you'll see he was a two-way player who showed elusiveness on offense and physicality on defense. That combination is impressive, and another year of development while he was at prep school could only help in getting him ready for the big show.
If we dont see Starks playing in the secondary this year he certainly has the intangibles to get some special teams reps this year on kick return or kick coverage. After already taking an “unofficial” redshirt in 2019 while at prep school I don’t think the coaches will hold him back, and if they can get him out there as a contributor in the third phase of the game they’ll do it.
