Thoughts: Lets take a moment and hop in the way back machine, set that thing for January of 2019 and remember just how big a get Renato was at that time, and even still today. Within the first few weeks of the Ledford hire it seemed like things were paying off on the recruiting trail and we saw a lot of that improvement on the field last season. Brown was being courted by quite a few high-profile schools but I think Ledford and Ponce sold him on the ability to come in, have a shot at early PT in 2019, but without questions compete for a starting spot in 2020.
Once again, we don’t have the full spring practice schedule to judge against or pull from but teh recent depth chart release for summer is projecting Brown as the starting right tackle, replacing the graduate Tyler Haycraft. While I put an emphasis on the staff targeting longer/leaner lineman Brown was an exception to the rule but his size and athleticism is something they can make work. It would be like passing on a Mekhi Becton because he was a bit larger than you typically like…in other words, a poor choice.
I was going to clip a few plays from the limited reps he got last season in the three games he appeared in but I think you can draw more form his high school tape than the short bursts we saw in 2019. Take a look not only at his size but his ability to get up the field and move around plenty of ‘meat’ on the other side of the ball. While a redshirt freshman doesn’t totally change the course of the offense don’t be shocked to see a few more dives or reads going to the right in 2020 similar to how they ran behind Mekhi last year.

It’s got to feel pretty nice taking care of you mom after she helped get you to an incredible level of achievement like playing a sport professionally. I never got to do that personally but I remember in like the 3rd grade I bought my mom these cubic zirconia earrings from the Christmas fair at school, and I was pretty pumped about it. No clue she didn’t have pierced ears. It probably feels something like that, though.
