Thoughts: If this post sounds similar to yesterday’s it’s because we got two guys who are both from the Kentuckiana area, who both joined the program around the same time, who both walked-on, and who both were key in filling in some depth for this new staff along the offensive line.
If Brandon’s nickname isn’t “Beef” that is a great opportunity missed, so I’ll just assume it is and say that Beef is another guy the Cards absolutely needed to plug some roster issues back in 2018. The new staff knew they were losing some guys from 2018 and were able to bring in four freshman on the line last year to keep their numbers at a reasonable level (16) but without Wellington or Sowders who we covered yesterday they would not have been able to fill out a three deep at each position, which is bit crazy for the O-line. This year those numbers dip even more (13) as players graduate or get drafted so Wellington is key to providing another body in the BOB room.
Wellington will likely still see the majority of his PT show up on the practice field but don’t be shocked to see him slide in some games this year if the opportunity arises. It’s a bit cliche’ but true in that we are one play away from Wellington being a backup right now, and offering supplemental relief up front during the year. Shout out to the local kid who came to the program when things weren’t exactly great around here with communication and interaction (see tweet below), glad to have you on board Beef Brandon.
