Position: Tight End

Hometown: Glendale, AZ

Thoughts: The Cards picked up a commitment from Dez Melton last year on the eve of National Signing Day and it sounded even then as if the Cards were looking to transition Dez from his previous position (RB) in high school to a spot where they needed some depth and young talent at TE.

Now, after a full season of seeing it in action I think many Cardinal fans better understand the function of the H-back (Marshon Ford) and how that position is different than a more traditional tight end who generally occupies the space at the end of the line. While I think Dez might actually be a better fit initially at the H-back spot as he has plenty of experience coming out the backfield, his best shot at early PT would be lining up outside as Ford has solidified his presence in that role. The Cards lose Jordan Davis in that spot and are looking at Tobias Little and Isaac Martin to help (and maybe Ean Pfeifer), but Dez is a threat to earn some reps in 2020 after taking a redshirt last season.

Take a peek at his time back at Deer Valley where he was shedding blocks, catching balls, and flashing some speed in the musky Glendale, Arizona air.

Sweet Tweet: This one comes from his High School instead of Dez himself, but interesting none the less. The young man flat footed what I’m estimating to be a 52-54” box. He just cleared a 2nd grader in a single jump, folks….show your respect.
