Louisville will face reigning national runner-up Texas Tech on Dec. 10 at Madison Square Garden in one half of the 25th annual Jimmy V. Classic. Indiana will face Connecticut in the other game. Tip-off times for the games will be announced at a later date.
“We are thrilled to welcome Indiana, Louisville, Texas Tech and UConn to this year’s Classic,” said Pete Derzis, ESPN senior vice president of college sports programming and ESPN Events. “The legacy of Jim Valvano and the work of the V Foundation continue to be honored through this event, and we look forward to bringing fans two great matchups as we raise funds and awareness for cancer research.”
If you were looking for the toughest of the three opponents for Louisville to face, you’ve got it. Despite losing a healthy amount of scoring from last year’s squad, Texas Tech still figures to be ranked squarely in the preseason top 25 and seems more than likely to carry a national ranking into this early December showdown. Also, Chris Mack vs. Chris Beard in a meeting of two of the sport’s top young coaches is an easy storyline.
This will be Louisville’s third appearance in the Jimmy V. Classic. The Cards beat Indiana 94-74 in 2014 and fell 72-65 to Arizona in 2006. This will also be the first ever meeting between U of L and Texas Tech.
