Louisville softball earns NCAA tournament bid

The Cards are going dancing for the 14th time.

After falling to North Carolina in its opening game of the ACC tournament, the Louisville softball team entered last weekend squarely on the NCAA tournament bubble.

That explains the reaction when the 33-21 Cardinals saw their name pop up during the softball selection show on Sunday.

Under first-year head coach Holly Aprile, Louisville is headed to the Evanston Regional, where they’ll face face Southern Illinois in the first round of the tournament on Friday at 1 p.m. Northwestern, the host and the No. 16 overall seed, will play Detroit Mercy in the other first round game at 3:30 p.m. (ET). Both games will be shown on ESPN3.

It’s the 14th NCAA tournament appearance for U of L, which, despite fielding several powerful teams over the years, has never made it out of the regional round of the big dance. Here’s hoping this is the year that changes.
