Highlights:
Evaluation: Louisville needs depth at linebacker and they need guys that can come in and contribute to the new scheme. Montgomery fills those needs because he has experience at the college level and he put up great numbers in a similar role to what he can fill at Louisville. Montgomery plays really well in space and shows off his great closing speed routinely. His three interceptions are a sign that he can read and react well and he also showed good coverage skills against slot receivers. Louisville will look to add athletic players who might not have “prototype” size in their new scheme and I think that Montgomery has a chance to be a contributor in the 2019 season because of his ideal fit.
Summary: Louisville fans have understandable questions about how the new staff will be able to recruit at the power five level and the commitment of Monty Montgomery probably didn’t help those concerns. However, Montgomery will come to UofL after landing on the NJCAA All-American team. The staff only targeted three total JUCO players in this class and Montgomery made the cut for a reason. He fits what the defense will do and the staff made him a priority in this class even though they had other options with high school players.
“Monty Montgomery is a play maker. Do not let the size fool you!”
