On the same day the Louisville basketball team will relinquish its hold on the nation’s No. 1 ranking, the Cardinal baseball team is wrapping its arms around the top spot for its sport.

U of L is No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll, which was released Monday morning. The ranking marks the first time the Cards will start a season at No. 1, and just the third time in program history Louisville has sat atop a top 25 poll (Dan McDonnell’s team was also No. 1 for two weeks in March of 2017).

Louisville is coming off a season in which it went 51-18 and reached the bracket final of the College World Series, its deepest run yet at the event. The Cardinals return several key pieces from that team, including ace pitcher Reid Detmers.
