Well. It was not a thing of beauty, but it was a win.
Louisville played tough defense and held Oklahoma State to 48 points on 18 of 71 shooting. However Louisville shot 47.5% from the field but only grabbed 7 of their 47 rebounds on the offensive end. The Cards had 21 turnovers and many of them seemed unforced. Louisville also seemed gassed at the end of both halves which is of some concern as they head into a game with Oregon tomorrow.
Dana Evans had another stellar game. She scored a career high 28 points and had 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Elizabeth Balogun had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Bionca Dunham had 10 rebounds and 6 points.
After the game Coach Walz spoke to Nick Curran of 790 KRD and said this of his team’s turnover problem, “When we actually throw the ball to our own team it’s pretty amazing what we can do.” He added, “We’ve got to get back to it in practice and put three balls on the rack. If you get three turnovers during a competitive drill then you’ve gotta run and I’ve got to make it a run that they don’t want to do....They’d rather not run than know if they turn the ball over they may win.”
He said, “I was really proud of the way we defended. This was a game that I really challenged them. We have not done a good job following the scouting report, and I thought that tonight we followed the scouting report to a T.” He added, “I thought Bionca played really well defensively. She really set the tone.”
He finished with, “That’s 102 wins over unranked teams and I’m telling you people that’s not easy.”
Speaking of not easy, the Cards close out the tournament tomorrow with a game again #1 Oregon. The game is at 3:15 and can be seen on flohoops, com.
