Louisville barely rolls past UT-Arlington 76-67

NCAA Womens Basketball: NCAA Tournament-Albany Regional-Oregon State vs Louisville Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

In the first quarter UT-Arlington brought the sauce and looked like they were ready to make a meal of the Cards. They were tenacious and scrappy, but Louisville hung tough and went into halftime with a 43-36 lead. In the second half Louisville looked like they were going to squash the competition, but it almost turned into a turkey when the Mavericks carved into Louisville’s 16 point lead and got it down to 5 with under 2 minutes to go. Then Dana Evans and Jazmine Jones added the gravy on top by making their free throws, and in the end the Cards ended up being thankful to close out their first game in St. Thomas with a victory.

Jazmine Jones scored a cornucopia of points (24) to which she added 7 assists. Dana Evans had 19 points. Kylee Shook continued stuffing the ball on the opponent with 5 blocks.

In his postgame interview with Nick Curran on 790 KRD Coach Walz said, “I’ll take a win there’s no question about it.” He went on to say, “We’re not as physical a team as we used to be in the past few years, and that’s something that we’re really working on....We did not execute well at all. At the offensive end we were very sloppy. I challenged our players after the game. I said ‘guys, in my 13 years this is probably our worst defensive team that we've ever had and offensive execution is probably the worst at this point in time in the season. And that’s not two good things to have.’”

The Cards have a quick turnaround and play again tomorrow at 1PM. They meet Oklahoma State and the game can be seen on flohoops.com.
