#20 Trenell Troutman
Hometown: Miami, FL
Thoughts: The name Trenell Troutman has been floating around the program for quite some time. Not only because he was an early target for the Card but was an extremely early commit. Being recruited heavily by Cort Dennison and Kolby Smith Trenell decided he had seen enough, and shut down his recruiting process committing to the Cards in early July…of 2016. Almost a full 19 months before his signing day Trenell was on board with the Cards and now we finally get to see what he’s all about.
Call it a good eye for talent or a tad bit lucky (I’ll take either) but not only did Troutman maintain his level of play through his commitment, he actually got much better. Troutman finished his high school career as a consensus 4 star safety who was a Top 25 player at his position nationally and Top 50 player overall in the state of Florida. Starting out at Miami Northwestern (Teddy, Eli, Michaelee Harris…ever heard of them?) Troutman transferred to St. Thomas Aquinas his last two seasons, winning a state title in 2016 and helping lead his squad to a 10-3 record last year. An Offensive-Defensive all-American Troutman can not only lay a hit but has the ability to catch a ball or three as well. Check out the hands…
I’ll be real interested to see how Fall camp goes for Troutman as there may be opportunity in the secondary if he comes in guns blazing. At a minimum I anticipate Troutman will get the “four game trial” that numerous other true freshman will see, allowing him to keep his redshirt if Petrino decides that’s the best option. Even if he doesn’t make a big splash in 2018 Troutman is a player I envision being a three or four year contributor on defense.
With all the new rules regarding safety in the college game I imagine wearing studded cleats is frowned upon, but if not….bring em out Petrino. Throw on those bad boys and the Murderbird unis and dare anyone to step on the field with you.
