Thoughts: Kaheem flew a bit under the radar early in his high school career but garnered enough attention his last season and a half to easily fill just about any young man’s wish list of schools perusing him. The Cards had been watching Roach and planting seeds with him for awhile but after he began getting some interest from LSU Coach Cort Dennison knew he was going to have to fight off some other big schools to get his man, and he was correct. The Cards beat out LSU, Auburn, and Illinois among others for the services of Roach, a Top 100 corner nationally according to at least one service.

Roach played a mixture of safety and corner in high school and showed little fear in attacking the ball. Coach Ward highlighted his aggressiveness on NSD last season while also letting the fans know he needs to pull it back at times and not play out of control. Roach took a redshirt last year as the Cards had some upperclassmen in the secondary that have since departed due to graduation or early entree into the draft. Roach performed well by all accounts in the Spring getting singled out by Coach Petrino a couple times for his tackling in space and for grabbing a couple interceptions. Something I’m sure he will build on through the summer and into fall camp.

The secondary, especially at safety, is still a tossup to me at this point. We have some Juniors and Seniors who one may assume to be the successors to the departed, but you can’t overlook the play of TreSean Smith last year or a player like Roach to make a move at safety. The departure of Lyn Strange will free up some more space for Roach, Smith, and Jack Fagot to compete with the upperclassmen Dee Smith and Khane Pass but I don’t think anyone can predict at this point just who will be the Day 1 starters a little over 5 weeks from today. This position battle will be something to keep an eye on as we get closer and closer to kicking this thing off.
