Today begins four straight days of special team’s players on the Cards roster. So this, the 29th week of 2018, shall henceforth and forever be known as ‘Regulator Week’ on the Cardinal Countdown. Mount up.
#47 Austin Johnson
Class: RS Sophomore
Hometown: Louisville, KY (Product of DeSales High School)
Thoughts: Austin, a lifelong Card’s fan, has been with the program a few seasons now and continues to compete with Mason King for the starting punter gig, a job Mason won back in 2016 and has held onto since that time. In a perfect scenario Johnson would be getting a couple reps here or there to give King a breather but for the third year in a row the number of punt attempts from Louisville’s offense has dropped from the season prior. In the 2015 season the Cards punted 70 times, 55 back in 2016, and in 2017 Louisville only attempted 44 punts, good enough for the sixth lowest total in the country.
Austin is the brother of former Cardinal punter Ryan Johnson who held the starting job back in 2012-2014. In an interview back in 2015, when Austin committed, he spoke about his love for the Cards growing up in Louisville, understanding the pressures that come with the job, and taking as many pointers as he could from his older brother. While Mason has done a heck of job for the Cards I’m glad to see Johnson continuing to progress. Petrino highlighted his “operation times” (from catch to punt) this Spring and was happy with his work over the last year. As important as special teams are it’s always good to have a confident and competent punter ready to go if needed. Johnson is that man.
Austin retweeted this…it is still one of the greatest videos of all time….I will now make you watch it again. #FutureCardsCoach
