#51 Keon Johnson
Class: RS Freshman
Hometown: Palm Beach Gardens, FL
Thoughts: Keon walked-on with the Cards last year out of Dwyer High School, which is just down the road from Boynton Beach High school, a place that gave us Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Lamar Jackson. Johnson was bit of a hybrid in high school playing some linebacker but also getting reps at defensive end. What stood out to me in the limited film I reviewed was his ball pursuit. While he wasn’t always getting a ton of pressure in the backfield, rarely would he let someone get past him more than a step or two. While I would have loved to see the Peanut Tillman “punch” a few times on those trailing tackles he showed toughness and seemed to always get his man to the ground. The other thing I noticed is that early in his high school career he played a decent amount on special teams, a skill that will not go unnoticed if we need some more bodies this year on punt or kick coverage.
Look for Keon to “break maiden” at some point this season and possibly get some reps on defense in certain situations. In the mean time let’s check out some highlights from seasons past.
Nothing real exciting from Keon on the twitters, but with Keon being a walk-on what a good chance to tweet out this vid showing a few brief highlights of some of the “scholarship surprises” that have happened around the country. In my opinion, one of the best things going in college athletics right now….
