The Cardinal Countdown: 98 Days Until Kickoff

NCAA Football: Syracuse at Louisville Jamie Rhodes-USA TODAY Sports

#98 Tabarius Peterson

Class: RS Sophomore

Ht/Wt: 6-3/246

Position: Linebacker

Hometown: Tucker, GA

Thoughts: Peterson was a nice addition to the front seven last season, picking up some additional playing time as the year progressed and making some impact plays with the second team unit against Murray St and Kent State early in the year. Peterson’s real impact in 2017 came with the special teams unit where he was a heat seeking missile on what seemed like every single kickoff. He kindly introduced himself to Cards fans in the first quarter of the opening game last year (the first of his career as well), tracking the ball, brushing off a block, and then destroying the poor Purdue returner, forcing a fumble and setting up great field position…

With the Sirmon defensive scheme Peterson was listed as a defensive end, but appeared to be playing an outside backer who occasionally had his hand in the dirt. For most of 2017 Peterson was sitting behind Trevon Young on the depth chart, so with Young’s graduation one could expect to see more of Peterson this year down in the trenches. The caveat of course, as with most defenders I’ll cover, will be how BVG (Brian Vangorder) implements his system and where certain folks might end up when the summer dust settles. Peterson is a hybrid, so to speak, and I think his size and flexibility will get him on the field no matter what. The big question will be how BVG replaces almost an entire defensive front losing Bailey, Richardson, Young, and Hearns to graduation. There are some older guys who will be relied upon (Richardson, FamU, etc) but Peterson and some other young guys will be key to how the unit gets viewed as a whole.
