As expected, the Louisville women’s basketball team heard its name called as a No. 1 seed during the NCAA Women’s Tournament selection show Monday night. It is the first time Jeff Walz’s program has ever earned the honor of being on the tournament’s top line.

The Cardinals will host Boise State at noon on Friday and then will face the winner of No. 8 seed Marquette and No. 9 seed Dayton on Sunday. Should the Cards advance out of the opening weekend, they would play their Sweet 16 and Elite 8 games at Rupp Arena. So, yes, U of L could make the Final Four without having to play a single game out of state.
Doing so may be easier said than done. The Cardinals were handed a loaded region that includes perennial powerhouse Baylor as the No. 2 seed. The Bears throttled U of L, 97-63, in the Sweet 16 a year ago. Two more consistent powers in women’s basketball, Tennessee and Stanford, are the region’s No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, respectively.

Regardless of what the men do against Northern Kentucky on Tuesday, there will be more basketball played inside the KFC Yum Center this month.
