Lorenzo Ward will be Louisville football’s interim head coach

Mike Summers will call the plays.

Louisville secondary coach and associate head coach Lorenzo “Whammy” Ward will serve as the Cardinals’ interim head coach for the remainder of the 2018 season. Offensive line coach Mike Summers will serve as the de facto offensive coordinator and call the plays.

Ward, a 21-year coaching veteran at the FBS level, came to Louisville in 2017 after serving as Fresno State’s defensive coordinator. Ward was also the defensive coordinator at South Carolina for six seasons.

In addition to the firing of Petrino, U of L has also parted ways with Petrino’s son, Nic Petrino, and Petrino son in laws L.D. Scott and Ryan Beard, all of whom were members of the coaching staff. Director of football operations Andy Wagner, who came to Louisville from Western Kentucky with Petrino, has also been fired.

That’s going to be an awfully thin staff for the final two games of the season. I’m saying we bring Christian Laettner in as a special assistant for the Kentucky game and maybe Anton Gill for NC State on Saturday.

Why not? Let’s have some fun with it.
