Louisville basketball adds walk-on Will Rainey

The former Atherton standout caught Chris Mack’s eye during U of L’s walk-on tryouts.

Louisville has added walk-on guard Will Rainey to its roster for the 2018-19 season. The former Atherton High School standout played the past three seasons at Spalding.

Rainey will sit out this season per NCAA transfer rules, but will practice with the tema. He will be eligible to compete as a senior in 2019-20.

“We’re glad to have Will as a member of our team,” U of L coach Chris Mack said in a release. ”We discovered him in our recent campus walk-on tryouts and are confident that he will provide a significant help to our team in practice.”

In three seasons at Spalding (2015-18), Rainey totaled 102 points, 44 rebounds and 26 assists in 45 career games. He averaged 15.6 points and 4.2 rebounds as a senior at Atherton in 2014-15 on his way to earning All-District honors.

There are no basketball highlights of Rainey on YouTube, but this grainy video of him flipping a tire is enough for me to predict that he’s going to drop 7 points on Kentucky in 2019.

Welcome to the squad, Will.
