Thoughts: Mason “Da” King had a pretty incredible 2016 season for a freshman. On the countdown last year I told you he would be good, but I thought it would take a couple years for him to even make a small dent in my level of adoration that I had for Josh Appleby. I was wrong. The King played like an animal. I can tell you but I’ll let Louisville’s recap cover it for me…
Redshirt freshman punter who had an outstanding season in his first year ... set the school record for punting average in a season at 43.9 yards per punt ... ... recorded 16 punts that landed within the opposition’s 20-yard line ... nailed 14 punts of 50 or more yards ... more than half his punts were fair caught ...
Yeah, he good. Mason finished Top 20 nationally last year in average but that doesn’t tell the whole story as we know coffin corner kicks and pinning someone inside the five are much better than kicking it 60 yards down field. Mason is getting some preseason love on the award watch lists and even hit a few All-ACC squads in the last couple months. The kid is the real deal, and if he actually improves this year and the next we could have a NFL caliber punter wearing red and black. Oh, and he’ll probably be in the running for holder of the year, too. A few weeks back he, along with Blanton Creque, received well deserved full ride scholarships.
Sorry Appleby, it was good while it lasted.

My punter throws around more weight than half your defense.
If you aim for the King, ya best not miss.
