Donovan Mitchell saw his lifelong dream come to fruition Thursday night when he was selected by the Denver Nuggets with the 13th overall pick of the 2017 NBA Draft. The Nuggets were drafting on behalf of the Utah Jazz, who made a deal with Denver in order to secure Mitchell.
A 6’3 combo guard, Mitchell is the highest draft pick Louisville has produced since Terrence Williams went 11th overall in 2009. Earl Clark went 14th overall that same year.
Mitchell was the quintessential breakout sophomore star in 2016-17, averaging 15.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 2.1 steals per game. He upped all those averages after spending most of his freshman season as a role player, and after an especially strong performance during conference play, wound up being named First Team All-ACC.
Mitchell’s selection marks the fifth straight year in which Louisville has had a player selected in the NBA Draft. Major congrats to Donovan and best of luck to him at the next level.
