David Padgett will add to his 2017-18 U of L basketball staff by naming Greg Paulus as an assistant coach at a press conference Thursday afternoon. The news was first reported by the Courier-Journal.

Most fans likely best remember Paulus from his days at Duke. He played point guard for the Blue Devils from 2005-09, and ranks third on the program’s list of career leaders in assists.

Paulus began his coaching career as an assistant for the Navy Midshipmen during the 2010-11 season. He joined Thad Matta’s staff at Ohio State a year later as the team’s video coordinator. Paulus was promoted to assistant in 2013 and remained in that role up until Matta’s surprise firing this past summer.

Some may also remember that Paulus played quarterback at Syracuse during the 2009 football season. He started and completed 12 of 16 passes for 89 yards with one interception in a 10-9 loss at Louisville that year. The victory wound up being Steve Kragthorpe’s final one as the head coach of the Cardinals.

Paulus assumes the assistant coach spot that had been occupied by Jordan Fair before his official firing last week. U of L’s third assistant coach, Kenny Johnson, remains on paid administrative leave. Earlier this month, Padgett named former Stanford/LSU/Nevada/TCU head coach Trent Johnson as an assistant.

All things considered, this staff is shaping up to be much more formidable than I had feared a couple weeks ago. Just don’t make the guys start slapping the floor on defense.
