In the Cards last game against Florida State they held a slight lead late in the game but were unable to hold it. Today Miami whittled a 9 point Louisville lead down to 1 point with just over a minute to go, but this time the Cards were able to make the stops they needed to come away with a 63-59 victory.
In the first half Coach Walz continually yelled from the bench for the team to keep it moving when they were on offense. He even applauded Briahanna Jackson on a missed layup in traffic I'm assuming because he wanted to see more of that kind of aggressiveness. She also threw in a crazy shot as time was running out on the shot clock with two minutes to go in the game to push the lead to 5. Of course he also joked after the game that "she thinks she gets style points" because she'll make an acrobatic shot and then miss one that's wide open.
After the game he said that he was happy with how they ended the half on a Mariya Moore three in the closing seconds. "One thing I'll say about Mariya, when she wants the ball she'll scream for it...and Asia threw her a good pass." She finished the game with 24 points and 7 rebounds. Myisha Hines-Allen had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Louisville consistently shot just 37% throughout 3 quarters. However, they also had 20 offensive rebounds to only 8 for Miami. One of those rebounds was from freshman Bionca Dunham in the 3rd quarter. She finished the game with just 4 points and 3 rebounds but Coach Walz said "Bionca has been practicing really hard, and I thought she was fantastic." He said that he's trying to impress upon the freshman the connection between practicing hard and being mentally prepared to play in an intense game like this.
The next game is at home against Georgia Tech at 7PM. It can be seen on ACCN Extra.
