Thoughts: I remember it like it was yesterday. Mid-April, Sunday afternoon, me and my buddy are having a couple drinks and he starts going into the position battle for the second string long snapper….
Him: We assume Holba has the starting gig, but who’s gonna back him up? This guy Brendan Lowery is one bad ass long snapping fool. I know from experience dude, if you know what I mean.
Me: No you don’t.
Him: ….Well not me personally, but a guy I know. He saw Lowery snap it straight AND long.
Me: No he didn’t.
Him: ….No, no he didn’t. But you could imagine what it’d be like if he did right? Ehh..you need a drink, you good? Great, grand, wonderful…
Ok, that conversation may have been lifted from Billy Madison but you catch my drift. If you missed Day 49 go back and read it now. I’ll wait.
Welcome back, now that you’re all caught up on Colin lets learn a little more about Brendan Lowery who I think is the long snapper in waiting for 2017 and beyond. Lowery is a preferred walk-on from Illinois (the state, not the college) who actually came in with some solid credentials as a long snapper. Lowery performed well for Barrington High but honed his skills with well known long snapper trainer Nolan Owen. Rumor is they call Nolan the “Long snapper whisperer” (I just made that up). Nolan has actually put 21 long snappers into Division I programs, including 8 that are on a full ride scholarship and another 3 that are either currently enrolled or will be enrolled at Purdue in the fall (they punt A LOT...because they suck).
If you’ve got a minute to spare (quite literally) feel free to check out this clip of Brendan in high school. For those long snapper analyst “newbies” try and watch both the hands and feet of the punter. Both show very little movement side to side or up and down which is a great sign that Lowery was putting the ball right on the money more often than not. (The punter on the other hand…strugglin’ son)
The Cards are actually carrying three long snappers this year but Colin is a Senior so Lowery and Ryan Betlatch (Day 41) will probably have a few snap-offs to see who takes over those duties in the seasons to come.
The world awaits.
Sweet Tweet: Lowery has me blocked out from seeing his tweets which leaves me with no other choice on how to proceed. I tried to avoid it, I tried to overlook it this year, but with no tweets to make a snarky comment on I have been pushed to the edge.
Long. Snapper. Trick. Shot. Video.
I hope you’re happy with what you’ve done Brendan…
