The official U of L website has updated its roster for the 2016 football season, and perhaps the most notable revelation that update has produced is that fullback Griffin Uhl and linebacker Lamar Atkins are no longer with the team.
Uhl made national headlines in 2012 for being an athletic freak who wanted to play major college football despite not playing the sport at the high school level because the school didn't have a team. Despite wowing coaches at a number of camps, Uhl never wound up receiving a college scholarship (not playing high school football makes for a pretty difficult sell), but was told by the staff at U of L that he could join the team as a preferred walk-on. He accepted the offer.
After redshirting the 2012 season, Uhl saw action early on as a redshirt freshman in 2013 before injuries kept him off the field. In 2014, Uhl saw game action against Murray State, NC State, and Georgia. He was awarded a scholarship last August and appeared in 10 games for the Cardinals in 2015.
After redshirting in 2012, Atkins appeared in 23 games over the course of the 2013 and 2014 seasons at both fullback and on special teams. He was moved to linebacker before last season, and recorded six tackles in his junior year.
Best of luck to both players in whatever they choose to do going forward.
