Late last week, both wide receiver Dontez Byrd and Griffin Uhl tweeted out the news that they had been awarded scholarships for Louisville's 2015 football season. It turns out they weren't along.
According to the C-J's Steve Jones, seven Cardinals who had previously been walk-ons have been placed on scholarship for this season.
With fall classes under way, these U of L walk-ons - all of whom are and one day figure to be contributors on the field - ended up being granted scholarships: wide receiver Dontez Byrd (Ballard High School product), fullback Griffin Uhl (Henryville (Ind.) High product), long snapper Colin Holba (Eastern High product), running back Darius Skinner (Clark County High product), running back Malin Jones, defensive lineman Aaron Ahner and offensive tackle Toriano Roundtree.
Jones sat out last year as a transfer from Northwestern University. Roundtree was a late 2015 addition from Eastern Arizona junior college, and it comes as no surprise that he was put on scholarship as soon as one became available.
Offensive coordinator Garrick McGee said it's a happy moment on the team when walk-ons who have worked hard are rewarded with a scholarship. McGee assumes that they got the news about the scholarships during one-on-one meetings with coach Bobby Petrino.
"It's really cool thing for (Petrino), I know, because he talks about it all the time," McGee said. "And I know it's a cool thing for the kids and their parents."
Congrats to all these guys on their accomplishments.
