#24 Zykiesis Cannon

Class: Sophomore

Ht/Wt: 6-0/195

Position: Cornerback

Hometown: Mauldin, SC

Thoughts: Cannon was as solid prospect out of South Carolina last season and if you want to take a look at lasts year post I was fairly spot on with what I thought his role would be in 2014. (I thought the post was still funny too) Cannon got some reps on special teams, showed flashes (literally at times) that he had some speed to burn and could play with the big boys, and is now looking to take on a bigger role in the secondary in 2015. As Spring Camp concluded, and now that we’re 6 days into the fall, Cannon is still in the running for a starting spot at either corner or safety. Cannon has been getting some significant time with the first team defense at the safety position, but one would assume this move is more so out of necessity than performance at this point. If you haven’t been able to keep up with all the happenings of the last few days, (no shame in that) Chucky Williams has been noticeably absent in the secondary. One would think that a significant injury or potential disciplinary issue that would keep him out for an extended period would have somehow leaked at this point so I’m not extremely concerned, but reports are that Cannon has played well given this opportunity to fill in.

I pegged Tru Washington as my starting corner opposite Shaq just five days ago and nothing has really forced me to change my mind at this point. If Chucky is out for awhile than Cannon may become the man fairly quickly, but if he returns to practice soon, as most expect, I think Cannon falls back into a supporting role at either position, providing relief when necessary and still getting special teams reps every week. Trumaine Washington, Duke Culver, the emergence of true freshman Jaire Alexander and the constant praise I’ve heard about Cannon the last two years has me very excited about the secondary in 2016, 2017 and beyond.

Sweet Tweet:

Very underrated movie in the “let me sit down and watch a stupid movie” sub-category. I’m slightly older so maybe Tommy Boy, Black Sheep, Billy Madison, etc are my typical go-to films in that area, but this is creeping up there. Occasionally I try and weave a “you’re voice is like a combination of Fergie and Jesus” into a conversation or if me and one of my buddies agree on something I’ll throw out a “did we just become best friends?” but my all time favorite reference came last year when it was just me and my then almost 2 year old daughter playing with some kids instruments. We’d been playing for awhile and I had to go grab something from the kitchen when all of the sudden I hear her beating on the drum I was just using, but every time I turned around she would stop. I of course dropped a couple “did you touch my drum” references. Obviously she had no clue what I was talking about, but thought what I was saying was absolutely hilarious.

Top 10 moment as a parent.
