#97 DeAngelo Brown
Position: Defensive Tackle
Hometown: Savannah, GA
Thoughts: Last year when I was putting together this countdown I felt as if DeAngelo was a perfect fit for the starting Nose Tackle position. He had the size, the strength and the shiftiness to not get pushed around and fill the gaps up the gut, even though he was still coming back from in a injury just a season ago. Grantham apparently agreed with me as Brown got the opening night start against the Hurricanes and played pretty solid, along with the rest of the defense. Then, Pio started playing out of his damn mind. Grantham couldn’t keep him off the field, and with Rankins and Dubose playing great at the ends he gave Pio the nod at NT for the next few contests with Brown providing a heavy relief effort, still seeing action in all 13 games. The combination of Brown and Pio played great inside, allowing only 1.8yds before contact compared to 2.7yds before contact on outside runs (ESPN Stats and Info). They also only allowed one run over 20yds up the middle of the defense all year. It’s difficult to “assign” permanent roles along the front of the 3-4 defense because they tend to shift around at times, especially if you have the athletes who can do that without a drop off like Grantham did last year. Pio appears primed now to slide over to the void at defensive end left from BJ Dubose, Rankins will pick up where he left off at the other end position and Brown now becomes your starting NT. With that said, we still have 97 days for things to change and Johnny Richardson is a massive man who could really push Brown for PT in the middle. I anticipate a similar story at NT in 2015 to what we saw last year with the two sharing reps and clogging up the middle with some damn good results.
Sweet Tweet: While I typically try to avoid retweets and aim to provide you some original content from the player…this was too good to pass on.
#72, you even lift, bro?
