Mauldin, Gaines And Parker Named To Preseason Watch Lists

Three University of Louisville football players have been named to the preseason watch lists on Monday morning.

Wide receiver DeVante Parker was named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, which is given to the college football Player of the Year. Defensive end Lorenzo Mauldin was tabbed to the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch list, which is handed to the Defensive Player of the Year, while cornerback Charles Gaines was named to the Paul Hornung Award Watch List, which is given to the most versatile player in college football.

Parker is one of the game's most dominating wide receivers after a productive 2013 season. The 6-foot-3 wide out caught 55 passes for 885 yards and tied a school record with 12 touchdown receptions last year. A first team All-American Athletic Conference selection last season, Parker caught a career-high nine passes in wins over Cincinnati and Miami. In the Russell Athletic Bowl win over the Hurricanes, Parker registered 142 yards receiving and a score.

For his career, Parker has 113 receptions for 1,920 yards and 28 touchdowns, which is the third-most in school history. Parker is averaging 16.9 yards a reception during his first three seasons.

Mauldin is one of the most dominating pass rushers in college football after a career-best season in 2013. Mauldin finished in the top 20 nationally in sacks with 9.5. He had a career-best 2.0 sacks in wins over Kentucky and Temple.

A second team all-conference selection a year ago, Mauldin recorded a career-high 40 tackles and 12.0 tackles for loss playing on the nation's top-ranked defense. He totaled a season-high six tackles against Central Florida and Cincinnati, while totaling a career-high 3.0 tackles for loss against Kentucky and Temple.

Gaines is one of the most exciting players after an electrifying 2013 campaign. A first team all-conference honoree, Gaines scored three touchdowns, scoring on an interception, fumble and punt returns last season. He returned an interception 70 yards versus USF and a kickoff 93 yards in a win over FIU.

Starting 10 games at the cornerback position, Gaines led the Cardinals with five interceptions and registered 22 tackles in his first season as a corner.
