The Louisville to Minnesota connection carried on Thursday night when the Twins selected Cardinal closer Nick Burdi with the 46th overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft.
The selection made Burdi the highest draft pick in the history of U of L baseball, surpassing 2007 grad Trystan Magnuson (pick 57), who was also a closer.
Burdi, whose fastball regularly reaches triple digits on the radar gun, has 16 saves and a 0.54 ERA in 28 appearances this season. He picked up the save in the Cards' regional-clinching victory over Kentucky on Sunday.
Burdi will have plenty of Cardinal friends to call for a drink in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, as Gorgui Dieng (Minnesota Timberwolves), Asia Taylor (Minnesota Lynx), Teddy Bridgewater (Minnesota Vikings) and Richard Pitino (Minnesota Gophers) all currently call the place their home.
Congratulations to Nick on what is undoubtedly one of the biggest nights of his life.
Now head to the pros as a national champion.
