Louisville Blasts Iowa 83-53 To Make Sweet 16

Paul Halfacre-USA TODAY Sports

It'll be an especially sweet trip home for the Louisville women's basketball team, which now gets to take a run at another Final Four own its home court after Tuesday night's 83-53 throttling of Iowa.

The Cards will host seventh-seeded LSU inside the KFC Yum Center on Sunday at 2:30 p.m., and the winner of that game will take on either top-seeded Tennessee or No. 4 seed Maryland for a spot in the national semifinals.

To get back home, U of L had to take care of another team playing on its home court, and it had little trouble doing so. The Cards forced 19 Iowa turnovers and held the sixth-seeded Hawkeyes to a season-low point total and just 1-of-16 shooting from beyond the arc.

"They came out and played very well, especially defensively. They made us struggle offensively," Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said. "They only scored four points over their average, but it was their defense that took us out of our game."

Louisville, on the other hand, had little trouble putting the ball in the basket before the game was out of reah. Shoni Schimmel led five Cardinals in double figures by dropping a game-high 26 points. Antonita Slaughter buried five of her six three-point attempts and added 17 points.

Jeff Walz wasted no time after the victory trying to galvanize the fan base for this weekend's game.

Tickets starting at $25 are available through TicketMaster.

Let's win three this weekend...and then some more after that.
