Cardinal Softball Team Takes First Step Toward Regional Title

Something about survive and advance. I don't know, I'm not great at ledes. Or trying.

A late flurry (maybe too strong of a word) propelled the Louisville softball team to a 2-1 victory over IPFW in the opening game of the regional tournament Friday night at Ulmer Stadium. The 15th-seeded Cardinals are attempting to advance to the super regionals for the first time in program history.

It was none other than CC favorite Hannah Kiyohara who played hero on Friday, scoring U of L's first run in the 5th inning and then driving in the winning one an inning later.

"I was just trying to get something going, just trying to put the bat on the ball," Kiyohara said after the game. "My first at-bat I was way out ahead of myself, so my next at-bat I took a couple of pitches and felt way more comfortable."

The Cards weren't out of the woods after they got the lead, however. A pair of errors allowed IPFW to load the bases in the seventh with two outs, but U of L hurler Rachel Lecoq was able to get Alex Bosquet to ground out to second to end the game.

The action at Ulmer continues today, as Louisville will face UAB at 2 p.m. The Blazers defeated UCLA 6-3 on Friday. If the Cards win, they will move on to Sunday's championship round. If U of L loses, they'll play in an elimination game tonight at 7:30.
