Louisville Softball Will Host NCAA Tournament Regional

For the second straight season, the Louisville softball team has earned the No. 15 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament and will host a regional at Ulmer Stadium.

The Cardinals (46-11), who lost to South Florida in the semifinals of the Big East Tournament last weekend, will face IPFW (32-14) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. UCLA (37-18) and UAB (37-16) will meet at 5 p.m. in the opening game of the regional.

This marks U of L's tenth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance and the third straight time it has served as a regional site host. Despite that success, the Cardinals have never advanced to the Super Regional stage.

"We were 55-5 last year; we had the best winning percentage in the country, and you can't take that away from us. That was an awesome year," outfielder Chrisanna Roberts told the C-J last month. "But we lost in regionals. You had teams we beat (playing) in the College World Series, and we're sitting at home watching. So yes, it's always good to have a great regular season, but you can only judge by postseason results."

The winner of the Louisville regional will face the winner of the Gainesville regional (hosted by No. 2 overall seed Florida) in a three-game series.

I've expressed my affinity for softball multiple times on here. During my brief newspaper stint in Iowa, it was by far my favorite high school sport to cover...which sounds creepy, I guess, but hear me out. The action happens quickly, the games are typically pretty fast and the cheers are both creative and delightful. I might have just made it creepier, but my stance isn't changing, softball is awesome.
