Louisville took the "boom" effect to another level on Saturday, turning a game with Louisiana Lafayette that was close throughout the first half into a 113-74 laugher.
"We wanted to wear them out," Rick Pitino said after the game. "Mission accomplished."
The 113 points scored by the Cardinals was a season-high as well as a KFC Yum Center high. It was one point shy of matching the highest total of the Pitino era.
Montrezl Harrell scored a team-high 20 points to lead six Cardinals in double figures. Chris Jones (19), Russ Smith (16), Wayne Blackshear (15), Terry Rozier (11) and Luke Hancock (10) also breached the 10-point mark.
More notes:
--Luke Hancock's 10 points this afternoon left him with 1,000 for his college career. Because a chunk of those points were scored during his time at George Mason, Hancock does not figure into Louisville's total of 1,000-point scorers.
--Peyton Siva Sr. made a triumphant return to the Yum Center, sporting a Peyton Siva Jr. Detroit Pistons jersey with no sleeves underneath...per usual.
--After challenging the junior earlier in the week, Pitino said Wayne Blackshear played his best game of the season on Saturday. Blackshear was extremely aggressive, as evidenced by his 9-of-10 performance from the free-throw line. He also came away with a team-high four steals to go with five rebounds.
--David Levitch: 1 point, 2 boards. We're not even two weeks away from Christmas and I'm already fat off of all this Holiday Levitch.
--Kevin Ware played just 1 minute and seems to be back in Rick Pitino's doghouse. "Kevin did something I don't like and he's going to sit a while," the coach said after the game.
--Another season of WHAS broadcasts in the books. Another season of WHAS broadcasts without Drew Deener saying "penis" on the air.
--Terry Rozier hit five of six shots and handed out a career-high six assists. The Derby City's collective crush continues to blossom.
--TACOS FOR DAYS.
--This was easily the most energy we've seen from Mangok Mathiang, who grabbed six rebounds and blocked four shots, but really did a lot more than what shows up in the box score.
--For the first time since he's been here, Montrezl Harrell buried an outside jumper and looked like a legitimate shooter while doing it. That could be a huge development.
--The Cards connected on just 4-of-18 three-point attempts, but shot a season-best 71.4 percent from inside the arc.
--The U of L players now turn their attention to finals week before next Saturday's game against Western Kentucky.
Here's your final box score:
