In one of the most dominant races of the Breeders' Cup weekend, Rick Pitino's Goldencents romped to a dominating win in the Dirt Mile. Leading the entire way around, he was setting records for fastest opening fractions in this race, going just under 40 mph, and was still able to finish strong about three lengths in front of the second place horse, Golden Ticket.
While this may not have earned Goldencents the Champion Three Year Old honors, he is in contention. The three who I believe will be considered for the award will probably be Will Take Charge (who won the Travers, PA Derby and finished second by a nose in the $5 million Classic), Goldencents, and the Florida and Kentucky Derby winner, Orb. It is a tricky award, since Orb has been soundly beaten time and time again since the Derby, Will Take Charge has only fired in the later half of the year, and Goldencents has only three wins in 2013. It will be very interesting to see how this goes. Orb is the only horse with plans to race again in 2013, so if he wins that race, he will probably lock up the award.
In the mean time, let's just enjoy the powerful run Goldencents gave on Friday:
