The Louisville men's soccer team suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss at Rutgers on Sunday in a match that was nationally televised by CBS College Sports Network.
The Cards, who were riding the momentum of big wins over Ohio State and Notre Dame, outshot the Scarlet Knights 11-8 and had several opportunities to score the equalizer late, but could not convert.
"It's always nice to win games just by defending and working hard and grinding out a victory," RU goalkeeper Kvin McMullen said. "At the same time, it's a lot of pressure on the defense."
The Cards scored their lone goal of the afternoon in the 18th minute when senior Greg Cochrane found the back of the net after receiving a perfect feed from Will Vitalis. Rutgers knotted things up just nine minutes later when Max Moller beat Cardinal keeper Mike Mauro. The Scarlet Knights then netted the game-winner in the 59th minute when Kene Eze was able to get behind the U of L defense and make them pay.
The Cards are back in action at home on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against DePaul. In addition to the standard DePaul Day festivities, U of L will also be holding an Oktoberfest promotion where fans will be able to get a beer and a pretzel for just five bucks.
I'm usually not a fan of anything that attempts to overshadow a DePaul Day, but if it's gonna happen it better include alcohol.
