Lorenzo Mauldin gives us a scare

There was a scary moment at practice on Monday when freshman defensive end Lorenzo Mauldin injured his neck and was eventually carted off the field in an ambulance.

According to C.L. Brown, Charlie Strong accompanied Mauldin to the hospital where preliminary tests were negative. He was set to undergo more tests last night.

Mauldin, who has one of the more interesting backstories on the team (bounced around between foster and group homes for most of his life, was told just before national signing day, via fax, that South Carolina no longer had room for him), drew some attention earlier this summer with the enthusiasm he displayed on Twitter.

Given the depth at his position, there was a strong chance that Mauldin would redshirt this season even before Monday's injury. B.J. Butler, Greg Scruggs, William Savoy and Malcolm Mitchell all enter the season as defensive ends with game experience.

It sounds like this could have been much, much worse.
