At the end of the official write-up on the most recent Louisville football spring practice, it was noted that freshman Charles Gaines has made a position switch from wide receiver to cornerback.
Gaines, a Miami native, enrolled early at U of L and was one of the primary standouts during the three spring practices which were open to the public. Still, Louisville is equally deep and young at the wide receiver position, something that can't be said for the spot which Gaines will now occupy.
Based solely on his athleticism, it's not hard to believe that Gaines could be a tremendous corner for Vance Bedford and company. You just have to hope that he views the position switch as a positive, and that he makes a considerable effort to grasp the mental aspects of playing in the defensive backfield.
My guess is he'll still get a shot at touching the ball on special teams.
Other tidbits from Wednesday's practice:
--"Running backs Victor Anderson and Senorise Perry took most of the carries during the overtime scrimmage. Anderson appears to be healthy and running well through the first nine practices of the spring"
--"Tight end Josh Chichester made a couple of terrific catches from Will Stein for scores in the red zone, while kicker Chris Philpott booted a couple of field goals through the posts for scores"
