The women's basketball team put a cap on a tremendous weekend for U of L sports by thrashing No. 8 Kentucky 78-52 at the KFC Yum Center on Sunday.
The crowd of 22,152 that was on-hand was the nation's 6th largest college basketball crowd this season, men's or women's. Eight of the ten most attended games have featured Louisville or Kentucky.
Freshman sensation Shoni Schimmel led the way for the Cards by burying six three-pointers on her way to a season and game-high 26 points. Becky Burke added six threes and 21 points of her own for Louisville, which avenged a 34-point loss to the Cats last season.
Louisville has now taken six of the past seven meetings from Kentucky, and hasn't lost to UK at home since 1999.
The rivalry win was the culmination of a weekend that saw the Louisville men roll over South Alabama, the top-ranked men's soccer team pull off a thrilling 5-4 comeback victory over UCLA to earn their first trip to the College Cup, and the Cardinal football team accepting a bowl bid for the first time in four seasons.
Solid weekend to be a Card.
