Cards Blow Past Rutgers 8-1

Cardinal speedster Boomer Whiting homered and stole a Big East Tournament single-game record four bases as third-seeded Louisville trounced No. 2 Rutgers 8-1 in second round action at Brooklyn's KeySpan Park on Wednesday.

Aside from putting the Cards two wins away from a conference championship, the victory gave U of L (40-18) its first 40-win season in school history.

Big East Rookie of the Year Justin Marks (7-2) picked up the win, allowing one run on five hits in six innings of work.

Whiting, who leads Division-I with 72 stolen bases, was the offensive star for the Cards, going 2-for-3 with a bomb and a pair of RBI. Daniel Burton also homered, and Chris Dominguez was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs knocked in.

The Cards get a day off on Thursday, and will return to action on Friday in a rematch against either Rutgers or Villanova. Whoever wins Thursday's elimination game between the Scarlet Knights and Wildcats will have to defeat U of L twice on Friday to advance to Saturday's championship game.
