Happy Derby

Oh boy.

For me, it's always been Christmas, the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament and then Derby as far as favorite holiday/time of the year goes, but all three are special for very different reasons.

It's generally considered in poor taste to start drinking at 8:30 on Christmas morning, and you don't ordinarily see outrageous public nudity at B-dubs on the first Thursday afternoon of the big dance. Both fly tomorrow.

I'm rolling to Churchill with a fairly large group of people, and I fully expect to have no idea where any of them are between the hours of 2-5. So if you see a guy walking around in shorts and a shirt, make sure to ask him if he runs a semi-popular Louisville sports blog. If it's me, I'll take out a small loan and buy you half a beer.

  1. Court Vision
  2. Monba
  3. Tale of Ekati

Obama took Colonel John, Hillary took Eight Belles, David Padgett took Court Vision. As if there were ever a doubt who I was voting for.

Enjoy the day, all.

Not a good omen for Hillary

So sad what happened to Eight Belles.  That is terrible.

I get that horses are 1200 lbs. on legs the size of twigs, but how come we haven't figured out how to fix a broken ankle?  They said it was two compound fractures though, terrible.

Horses' ankles don't break

They shatter, correct? So sad.

I'm not googling, so I'm probably wrong on this

but I've seen Derbies and big races for a longggg time

But what's going on?  Breeding...or training, afoul?

The first "breakdown"  I remember was the horror

in 1988 of the great filly Winning Colors going down.

Then recently, Barbarossa...

and now this.

Maybe they didn't show breakdowns on TV before '88...

I'll Jog Your Fine Mind

Frank, I know you remember Ruffian, the filly that just about "took over" racing in the 1970's.  She had a match race (exceedingly rare, even then) with the big stallion Foolish Pleasure (I believe) and broke down after momentarily hitching stride to avoid a F@&$#*!! seagull, either at Aqueduct or Belmont.  Ruffian was loved and mourned.
Have a great night, big guy, Roz
